Chimayo Pilgrimage Fence
El Santuario de Chimayo, Chimayo, NM, 2020
Woven into the chain link fence surrounding the great pilgrimage site of El Santuario Chimayo, are pleas for wellness and healing. Rosaries, ribbons, and crosses, some made of nails twined together to evoke the barbed wires of the crucifixion are left for petition to the almighty. For Crowning the composition is a dangling blue face mask, the ubiquitous symbol of Covidtime. Taken in fall of 2020, when I visited this fence again in autumn 2021, the entire fence was festooned with masks.
