Changing scenes from New York City to New Mexico, I was introduced to new light and a new landscape. In 1975, William Jenkins of the George Eastman House coined the term “New Topographics” which marked a paradigm shift in the world of photography. Although it was imperceptible at the time, stark images of mundane but oddly fascinating topography was both a reflection of the increasingly suburbanized world around them and a reaction to the tyranny of idealized landscape photography that elevated the natural and elemental. This photograph underscores this shift by placing emphasis on the beauty and design of the car itself set against an unremarkable background.
